CMC promotes the four major themes of social participation: “talent cultivation,” “environmental conservation,” “care for people and culture,” and “neighborliness.” We are committed to giving back to and taking responsibility for the long-term development of the communities where we operate. The Company donated NT$1,644 thousand to community sponsorships to show its support and care for disadvantaged groups through public welfare cooperation. We also participated in community arts and cultural activities, such as Easter and Christmas evangelism activities. The Company proactively participates in cultural and creative investment, hoping to promote the overall development of the cultural and creative industry and fulfill its corporate social responsibility. CMC invests in a diverse range of domestic movies and gives full support to emerging directors. CMC Entertainment, a subsidiary of the Company, has invested NT$18,857 thousand in domestic movies, hoping to assist in the development of Chinese-language cinema and promote Taiwan’s cultural and creative industry on the world stage. We also supported the promotion of Go culture in Taiwan and donated NT$8,000 thousand to the “Taiwan Chi Yuan Culture Foundation” to cultivate more outstanding Go talents and officially introduce Taiwan’s professional Go to the international stage. In response to the government’s policy of cultivating art and cultural consumption habits, the CMC Cultural Foundation supported domestic arts organizations and sponsored NT$752 thousand. We promote the following project actions as part of our practical efforts to implement social participation.
Conceived with the corporate philosophy of “Taking from society and feeding back to society”
Diversified development of domestic movies and production of outstanding talent
CMC Group entered the audio-visual industry in 1995 and entered the film production industry in 2000, owning the largest family entertainment product distributor in Taiwan and Hong Kong, " Deltamac", the new lifestyle channel "TSUTAYA BOOKSTORE", and the leading brand of cinema channel " Vieshow Cinemas ". For more than 20 years, it has a layout from production (CMC Entertainment), distribution (CMC Entertainment, Deltamac), Vieshow Cinemas to channel (TSUTAYA BOOKSTORE), and is currently the only film and television group in Taiwan that has built a complete entertainment industry chain. The types of Chinese films invested by CMC are diverse, and it gives full support to emerging directors. In recent years, the films invested and filmed by CMC include Yang Yazhe's " The Bold, the Corrupt, and the Beautiful ", Ma Zhixiang's "KANO", Zhao Deyin's "The Road to Mandalay ", Cheng Weihao's " The Tag-Along " series, Qu Youning's " Back to the Good Times ", Hong Bohao's " Dad's Suit ", Lai Mengjie's " Stand By Me ", Xu Jiakai's " The Last Thieves ", Chen Dapu's "Crocodile", etc., The plot covers topics such as thriller and horror, social realism, youth growth, long-term care of the elderly, and even the recent popular blockchain business war, making the themes of Chinese films more diverse and richer. It can also extend to the demand for film and television entertainment of all ethnic groups in society.
The two Chinese films " Your Name Engraved Herein " and " Little Big Women ", invested by CMC Entertainment under the CMC Group, have been nominated for five and six Golden Horse Awards respectively, setting an excellent record that Taiwan's film industry cannot ignore in recent years. The theme of " The Post-Truth World " released in 2022 reflects the real status quo of society, the shooting technique is compact and exciting, and the unexpected plot reversal has aroused a lot of attention and discussion.Marry My Dead Body, a movie invested in and released in 2023, won the Golden Horse Awards for Best Adapted Screenplay and was the best-selling and highest-grossing domestic film of the year. The heartwarming film Day Off won the Golden Horse Awards for Best Supporting Actress and Best Original Film Song. The crime-suspense film The Abandoned won Best Soundtrack and Best Makeup & Costume Design at the 2023 Taipei Film Awards. The domestic films mentioned above vary in genre but have all been recognized by the film industry and performed well at the box office. This indicates that the domestic film market has become more diversified and that the film industry chain is increasingly robust. This positive trend is likely to encourage greater contributions and investment from local film practitioners. In recent years, the quality of domestic films has improved significantly. The impressive box office performance and the emergence of outstanding talent provide strong evidence of CMC’s long-term confidence, support, and persistence in the domestic film industry. In the future, we will continue to work hard to support the development of the Chinese-language film market, foster enhancement in the quality of film and television, and explore opportunities in overseas markets.
Historical Spot in Modern Spirit
After the successful takeover of the management right of 10 former houses used as the quarters of the US forces at Yangmingshan, the CMC Group started to remodel these obsolete houses and tidy up the yard. Effort has been made to overcome the problem of architectural techniques in conjunction with the public sector and consultation with several experts in the field. The water resistance feature of the tile, the renovation of the wood structure in roofing, and the overhaul of the lawn and the front yard, it helped to retain the fireplace and the chimney of these houses. Professional gardeners were also employed to take care of the yard in an attempt to retain the previous look at the time this place was used as the quarters of the US forces. The red roof, white wall and the green yard have been restored by CMC almost the same as was in the past as the quarters for US military personnel. This spot echoes with the scenic background of Yangmingshan, and makes it an ideal hideout for the public for recreation on holidays.
Beaumont Park: Intertwining of old buildings and good food
CMC spent huge sum of money to remodel several old houses to restore their original features, and introduced exotic foods from different cultures to satisfy the needs of the consumers to their entirety. Art objects in different characters were used to decorate the interior parts of these houses to give the taste of the old time where these houses were the quarters of the US military personnel in Taiwan. Once you walk into these houses, you will be enchanted by the miraculous wood structured roof, the American style fireplace and chimney, the big window, nicely ventilated partition, and a commanding view of the green lawn. These old houses constituted a snapshot of history showing the style of the old time, which is as enchanted and distinctive as it was. A number of restaurants were opened in this place presenting gourmet food of distinctive features to suit the needs of the diversity of consumers: Com In Dim (Chinese cuisine), Jing Zhi Zui (Japanese cuisine), Beaumont Bakery (bread and light meals), and Tai Zhi Zui (Taiwanese cuisine). Chairman Weng does not want the restaurants at Yangmingshan to emerge as a “Cuisine R&D Center,” but rather a “Beaumont Park” analogous to Universal Studios and Disneyland through the management right of the previous quarters for the US military personnel. The “Beaumont Park” is a hearty piece of work for CMC Group for the first time with a view to availing a new mode of life. They value the needs and satisfaction of the consumers and emphasize the importance of edutainment. It is a vital piece of work central to the artistic and cultural development of the CMC Group.
Harness the soft power of culture
It has been 23 years since the Foundation was established. Its purpose is to promote the art lifestyle and foster a more comprehensive environment for the development of arts and culture in Taiwan by participating in cultural and artistic activities. Under this goal, the CMC Cultural Foundation has engaged in the following specific projects: sponsoring arts groups and artists to provide them with more performance opportunities and creative space; sponsoring art-related publications and research papers; sponsoring large-scale art exhibitions and music performances both domestically and internationally to invigorate the culture of arts and culture in Taiwan; participating in activities organized by other cultural institutions or charitable groups, all with the aim of realizing the life of art. Additionally, the Foundation also proactively encourages the Company’s employees to participate in artistic and cultural activities and fosters an appreciation for the arts with specific measures.
In addition to focusing on the development and changes in the arts and culture environment, the Foundation began to organize application programs for two scholarships the “Dream Project” and the “Excellence Project” in 2022. Each year, opportunities and grants are released to help hard-working students pursue their dreams or cultivate their cultural development. The “Dream Project” encourages students who are about to graduate from university to propose their ideas for personal skills, interpersonal interactions, social service enthusiasm and environmental protection. Those who pass the written test will receive a scholarship of NT$20,000, with an online sharing session held after their ideas have been put into action. This will help take them a step closer to pursuing their dreams. The “Excellence Project” on the other hand is carried out in the form of an online book club for a period of six months, where quality books (biographies of famous people, arts and cultural books) are recommended to students. Each month, the students must submit a reading report and share their experience of reading with others. In doing so, the students are encouraged to read while strengthening their thinking ability. The richness of the contents of the reports serve as the basis for approving scholarships.
Do our best to send contribute to society
Besides the promotion and sharing of arts and culture, CMC Group is also committed to social welfare. For example, last year we purchased all the grapes at a charity sale held by Changhua Puxin – Grape 66 and donated all proceeds from the sale to Huashan Social Welfare Foundation. For many years, we have supported the private Pumen Home, donated warm clothing to Atayal seniors of the churches in the remote areas of Wufeng Township, Hsinchu, and sponsored the Garden of Mercy Foundation to care for and accompany children with AIDS and drug addiction in their early stages. We hope to extend our love to every corner of society, regardless of age, gender, or race, contributing warmth and support and fulfilling our corporate responsibility.
